As we know March is women’s history month and so we are highlighting some biased comments/phrases that most Nigerian women have to deal with, this, of course, is to bring to the knowledge of the public and possibly create a better orientation to the general public,

Sexist remarks, statement, or behavior is often characterized by prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination, when people say sexist remarks, it belittles women.

  1. IF YOU CANNOT COOK NO ONE WILL MARRY YOU: Every woman has somehow heard this before either from one’s parents, relatives or even friends, while it is true that cooking should be learned as an important life skill, it should not be attributed to a woman’s chance of getting married.
  2. YOU SHOULDN’T SIT IN FRONT OF A BUS WHILE TRAVELING: As an often traveler, each time I made an attempt to sit at the front, I was told the seat is reserved for only men, for a while it had me in my shell not until recently that I had to start bolding changing that narrative. Anyone regardless of gender can sit at the front if they choose to.
  3. YOU APPEAR IRRITATED, IS IT THAT TIME OF THE MONTH: To be a fair society in a way has shouldered stereotypes about women, it is rude to assume I am emotional because I may be at my time of the month.
  4. NOBODY WILL MARRY YOU IF YOU GET TOO RICH OR EDUCATED: Time and time again I tell people any man who will be intimidated by affluence is certainly not the kind of man I want to be with, this is the most common sexist statement, no woman should tune down her success just to fit a man in, no woman should aim less just to caress a man’s ego.
  5. HARSH OR DEROGATORY STATEMENTS ABOUT HER BODY: It is an imperative fact to note that women come in different shapes and sizes, hence it is rude to speak ill of a woman’s body, data shows that no matter how a woman is she has been spoken down to because of how she looks, either her boobs too small or her too big or her butt too small or her legs too tiny. All these are truly unacceptable, they demean women.
