A 35-year-old man, Jimoh Abdulquadri, has reportedly died while in police custody, according to the Kwara State Police Command. Abdulquadri was arrested on December 19, 2024 and passed away in the early hours of Friday.
Reports indicate that his detention was linked to an alleged debt of ₦220,000 owed to an individual named Peter. The deceased’s family has accused police officers at the state police headquarters of assaulting Abdulquadri during his time in custody, which they believe contributed to his death.
Reacting to the incident yesterday, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, ordered the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to take over the case. In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP also confirmed visiting Kwara State and meeting with the deceased’s family to express his condolences.
The IGP was received by Alhaji Sadiq Atiku Fulani, the Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, who represented the family. During the meeting, the IGP assured them of a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Abdulquadri’s death. “The IGP expressed his deepest sympathies to the family and promised that no stone would be left unturned in uncovering the truth behind this tragic event,” the statement read.
He further directed the FCID to handle the investigation diligently and ensure it is concluded professionally and transparently. The IGP reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability, professionalism and the protection of human rights.
The IGP also called on stakeholders and the public to remain calm and allow due legal processes to take their course.
