Joel CPS Oyatoye Olufayo II, aged 40, was crowned as the new Oloro of Oro Kingdom in Irepodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, on Monday. His coronation marks the return of his lineage to the throne after 234 years. The ceremony included traditional rites led by High Chief Otunola Taiwo, the Eesa of Oro.
Oro Kingdom comprises 11 autonomous communities, including Afin, Agbeola, Ido, Ijomu, Iludun, Irebode, Okeola, Okerimi, Otun, Olorunsogo and Sie. Born on January 27, 1984, Oba Oyatoye is a direct descendant of Oba Olufayo I, who ruled from 1785 to 1788.
Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Hon. Femi Agbaje Whyte, urged the new monarch to lead with integrity, fairness, and an open door policy. He emphasized the role of traditional rulers in preserving culture and unity, pledging the government’s continued support for traditional institutions and community development.
The Olupo of Ajase-Ipo and Chairman of Irepodun Traditional Council, Oba Ismail Alebiosu, praised the government for ensuring a smooth selection process. He encouraged unity among the people and urged the new Oloro to collaborate with chiefs, elders and the council for the kingdom’s progress. The coronation showcased Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, with Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, Executive Secretary of the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, emphasizing its significance.
The event ended with prayers for a long and successful reign for Oba Oyatoye, as community leaders and residents pledged their support for the growth and unity of Oro Kingdom.
