The Federal Government aims to increase the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector’s contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the current 14-16% to 21% in the next two to three years, according to the Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.
Speaking at the launch of a Data Protection Officers training programme yesterday in Abuja, Dr. Tijani emphasized the government’s commitment to positioning the digital economy as a key driver of growth. He highlighted ongoing investments in ICT infrastructure, artificial intelligence and digital transformation to boost productivity and connectivity across the nation.
The event also featured remarks from the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, who outlined efforts to empower Nigerian youth through innovation, entrepreneurship and improved relations between the police and young citizens.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, announced plans to certify 500 Data Protection Officers as part of the government’s effort to enhance data safety and privacy. While budgetary constraints limited the initial goal of training 3,000 officers, certification is now being offered free to encourage participation.
The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including NITDA Director-General Malam Kashifu Inuwa, NigComSat MD Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen and CP Uche Ifeanyi Henry of the National Cybersecurity Centre.
