MTN Nigeria has publicly apologized to its customers after facing backlash over a sudden 200% increase in the price of its 15GB data bundle. The plan, which previously cost ₦2,000, was raised to ₦6,000, sparking widespread complaints.
In a statement posted on its official Instagram page on Thursday, the telecom giant admitted to miscalculating the pricing adjustment and appealed for forgiveness. MTN acknowledged the frustration caused by the abrupt increase, stating, “We could give explanations, but all that is just story. We made a mistake.”
The company, appealing to customer loyalty, especially during the Valentine’s season, urged subscribers to move past the issue. “In this season of love, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter to us, and we will always show it,” the statement read.
MTN’s apology comes amid rising customer dissatisfaction and calls for boycotts over the price hike. The controversy has also led to renewed scrutiny of telecom pricing regulations in Nigeria.
