Nigerians are calling on the Federal Government to conduct new tests to verify the quality of petrol sold at filling stations across the country. This follows a viral video alleging that petrol from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) burns faster than expected.

The video showed a content creator comparing petrol from an NNPC station in Ojodu Berger and Dangote petrol from an MRS station in Alapere, Lagos. He claimed that a generator running on Dangote petrol lasted 30 minutes, while the one using NNPC fuel stopped after 17 minutes. However, NNPC denied selling substandard fuel, stating that much of its petrol in Lagos is sourced from the Dangote Refinery. Dangote officials, however, refuted this claim.

Public reactions have been mixed, with many Nigerians urging the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC) and NNPC to conduct official tests to determine the actual burn rate of their petrol. Some social media users defended the content creator’s experiment, while others questioned its accuracy, citing differences in generator conditions.

Meanwhile, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has backed NNPC, stating that independent tests confirmed the fuel meets industry standards. PETROAN’s spokesperson, Joseph Obele, emphasized that the fuel undergoes rigorous quality checks, including tests for flash point, density, viscosity, and sulfur content.

PETROAN also urged content creators to be responsible when sharing information on sensitive industry matters. The NNPC has assured the public that investigations will continue to address any concerns.
