The Federal Government has called on retailers to lower food prices in line with recent market reductions and avoid exploiting consumers.

Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Abubakar Kyari, made this appeal on Tuesday during the 2025 Wheat Farmers Green Field Day in Dabi village, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State. He expressed concern that despite the significant drop in prices of essential food items like flour, sugar, rice and pasta, many retailers have failed to adjust their selling prices accordingly.

Kyari described this practice as unfair and unpatriotic, noting that while retailers previously cited high costs as a reason for price increases, they have not responded similarly now that prices have dropped. For instance, the price of flour has fallen from ₦81,000 per bag to below ₦60,000, while spaghetti has reduced from ₦20,000 to ₦15,000.

He assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to ensuring food availability and will engage with relevant stakeholders to reflect the current market realities.

The event was organized in partnership with the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria, the Federal Government and the Jigawa State Government.
