The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has not responded to allegations by a Lagos based corps member, Ushie Uguamaye, who claims she is being threatened for criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s government.

In a viral video posted on TikTok, Uguamaye expressed frustration over Nigeria’s economic situation, highlighting inflation and hardship. She described the President as a “terrible leader” and questioned the government’s efforts to improve living conditions. She also criticized Lagos State, calling it a “smelling state” with poor living conditions.

The video quickly gained attention across social media, sparking discussions. However, after it went viral, Uguamaye alleged that NYSC officials were pressuring her to delete it. In a follow up post, she claimed she was being threatened and warned the public about her safety.

“Dear Nigerians, I am already getting threats from the NYSC board. In less than 24 hours, they are pressuring me to stop speaking. They have my address. If you don’t see me online, you know who to hold accountable,” she wrote.

She insisted she had done nothing wrong by speaking out against inflation, stating that being a corps member does not take away her right to express concerns. She also accused an NYSC official of trying to identify her, saying it made her fear for her safety.

Attempts to get a response from NYSC’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Edwin Megwa, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages.

Meanwhile, Uguamaye’s claims have drawn mixed reactions. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar praised her courage, describing her as part of a new generation of politically active women. He compared her to historic figures like Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Margaret Ekpo, calling for support rather than intimidation.

Similarly, the Social-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) urged President Tinubu to intervene and stop NYSC from harassing her. SERAP emphasized that citizens have the right to criticize the government without fear of retaliation.

Public reactions remain divided, with some supporting Uguamaye’s boldness and others condemning her criticism of the government.
