The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling tuberculosis (TB) by expanding free treatment and diagnostic services. The state’s Health Ministry has also introduced free chest X-rays and specialized TB diagnostics for children.
Speaking at the 2025 World Tuberculosis Day event in Ilorin, the First Lady of Kwara State, Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, urged residents to report suspected TB cases for early treatment. Represented by Alhaji Abdulganiyu Opeloyeru, Director General of Ajike People Support Center, she emphasized the need for community involvement to prevent the spread of the disease.
This year’s theme, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” highlights the importance of collaboration between the government and the public. AbdulRazaq called on Hausa and Yoruba communities to actively participate in TB awareness campaigns and ensure timely case reporting.
Chairman of the Kwara State House of Assembly Committee on Health, Seun Oguniyi, encouraged residents to take full advantage of the government’s free TB services. He also reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to eliminating quackery in the health sector.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina El-Imam, represented by Pharmacist Barakat Olanrewaju, stated that the state currently operates 646 Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) centers across public and private health facilities. Plans are underway to double this number to ensure TB services reach every community.
Additionally, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved free health insurance for TB patients and four family members, granting them access to treatments for various health conditions throughout the year.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including Hajia Hawawu Podo, spouse of the Executive Chairman of Ilorin South Local Government, Vice Chairman Mrs. Mary Abiodun and community leaders.
