The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched the second phase of its contactless biometric passport application system in four more countries: the United States, Mexico, Jamaica and Brazil.
According to a statement shared on the NIS official X page by its spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, the rollout in the U.S. begins on April 11, while Jamaica follows on April 14. Mexico and Brazil will also launch the service this April.
This move comes after the successful implementation of the contactless system in Europe, the UK, Ireland and Canada where it was first introduced on November 5, 2024.
The system, accessible via the “NIS Mobile” app on Google Play Store, allows Nigerians abroad to renew their passports without physically visiting a passport center for biometric capture. An iOS version is expected soon, alongside an improved app for both Android and iPhone users.
With this expansion, the contactless passport service is now available in Canada, the USA, Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil, Europe and parts of Asia. However, it is yet to be introduced in Nigeria and Australia. Dates for these countries will be announced later.
The NIS says it remains committed to offering more convenient and efficient services to Nigerians across the world.
