A heavy rainstorm struck parts of Kwara State over the weekend, causing widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and public facilities. In Ilesha Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area, the storm left one person dead and injured several others. Properties, including homes, food stores and warehouses, were badly damaged.
The Emir of Ilesha Baruba, Prof. Halidu Abubakar, described the storm’s impact as devastating and called for urgent government intervention to assist affected residents. Victims, including Alhaji Ibrahim Mora and Mallam Abdullahi Ibrahim, appealed for quick support to rebuild their homes and restore their livelihoods.
In Edu Local Government Area, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp at Yikpata also suffered severe damage. Roofs of administrative blocks, hostel buildings and the camp mosque were destroyed. Two vehicles were crushed by falling trees, but no lives were lost.
Kwara NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Onifade Olaoluwa, confirmed the incident and expressed relief that all corps members and staff remained safe. State officials, including the Commissioner for Youth Development, Shehu Ndanusa-Usman and the Etsu Tsaraji, HRH Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi, have visited the camp to assess the damage.
Meanwhile, in Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has sympathized with residents affected by Saturday’s rainstorm that caused extensive damage across the state. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
The governor, through his media aide, Yinka Oyebode, directed the State Emergency Management Agency to conduct a rapid assessment of the damage and begin providing assistance to victims. He assured residents that the government would support them and urged them to remain calm as recovery efforts commence.
Governor Oyebanji reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of citizens, promising timely support to those affected.
