The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of five suspects following a series of violent incidents in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area, on Sunday and Monday.

In a statement released yesterday night, the police said the unrest began when officers arrested a well-known drug dealer and suspected arms trafficker, identified as Azeez, also known as “AZ”. As he was being taken to the station, a group of angry youths attacked the officers and helped the suspect escape.

The group later attempted to break into the Omu-Aran police station but were quickly stopped by security personnel. The same group later went to the Olomu’s Palace, where they set fire to a motorcycle belonging to a police.

The following day, the mob attacked Olomu Aperan Microfinance Bank. They vandalized the bank’s signboard, CCTV cameras and damaged three vehicles on the premises. Police reinforcements arrived and five people were arrested at the scene. Bank staff were safely escorted to the station.

Police Commissioner Adekimi Ojo has ordered tighter patrols and surveillance in the area to prevent further violence. The command urged residents to stay calm, avoid spreading false information and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue.
