The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that bye-elections will take place on Saturday, August 16, 2025, across 12 states in Nigeria. These elections are being held to fill vacant seats in the National and State Houses of Assembly.

According to a statement from the commission, the decision follows consultations with political parties, security agencies and other stakeholders. The vacancies arose due to the resignation or death of lawmakers, as well as court rulings that nullified previous elections.

In preparation for the polls, INEC has also resumed Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) nationwide. The exercise will enable eligible Nigerians to register, update their information or transfer their voter registration to new locations. Those who have not collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are also encouraged to do so ahead of the elections.

INEC stressed the importance of the CVR and urged citizens, especially young people and first time voters, to take advantage of the opportunity. The commission assured that adequate measures are being put in place to ensure a smooth, free, fair and credible electoral process.

INEC also reminded political parties to adhere strictly to the timetable and guidelines for the bye-elections and warned against any form of violence, vote-buying or misconduct during the electoral period.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to deepening democracy and ensuring that no eligible Nigerian is left out of the electoral process.
