President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, as Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former president.
Speaking at a special Federal Executive Council session held in Buhari’s honour, Tinubu praised him as “a good, decent, and honourable man,” whose legacy of discipline, patriotism, and integrity will endure.
“Buhari was not perfect no leader is but he served Nigeria with sincerity and moral strength,” Tinubu said. “His incorruptible standards and quiet courage will not be forgotten.”
Reflecting on their alliance, Tinubu recalled the 2015 election victory as a historic shift in Nigerian democracy, saying Buhari led with restraint, dignity, and selflessness.
Even after leaving office, Tinubu noted, Buhari returned to Daura in humility “not to command from the shadows but to live simply, as he always had.”
He ended with a heartfelt prayer:
“Mai Gaskiya, the People’s General, your duty is done. May Allah forgive your shortcomings and grant you Aljannah Firdaus. Nigeria will remember you.”
