The camp of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has distanced itself from a reconciliation meeting between his former running mate, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, and the Julius Abure-led faction of the party.
The Labour Party has been in crisis since April, with multiple factions claiming leadership. While INEC recognizes Julius Abure as national chairman, the Supreme Court disqualified him, leading Lamidi Apapa to declare himself leader. Meanwhile, another faction led by Senator Nenadi Usman is backed by Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
Reacting to the meeting, Obidient Movement Coordinator Dr. Yunusa Tanko reaffirmed loyalty to Obi and the Usman-led group, saying they were unaware of the meeting with Abure. “Wherever Peter Obi goes, we go,” he stated, emphasizing their goal of real change in 2027.
Datti Baba-Ahmed acknowledged both the Abure and Usman factions, stressing he had no personal agenda and was committed to unity. He confirmed Obi remains with the Labour Party and called for reconciliation among party groups.
