President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, following allegations of certificate forgery. According to Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Nnaji resigned in a letter thanking the President for the opportunity to serve. Tinubu, who appointed him in August 2023, appreciated his service and wished him well. Presidency sources revealed that Tinubu privately asked Nnaji to step down rather than face a public dismissal. The decision was finalized on Tuesday after consultations with key advisers at the State House, Abuja. The resignation follows a Premium Times investigation alleging that Nnaji submitted forged university and NYSC certificates during his ministerial screening in 2023. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), reportedly disowned the degree he presented, saying he never completed his studies. Nnaji, however, denied any wrongdoing, insisting he earned a BSc in Microbiology/Biochemistry in 1985. He accused UNN officials of political manipulation and presented documents, including a 1985 graduation brochure, as proof of his credentials. He described the forgery claims as a smear campaign allegedly sponsored by political rivals. Nnaji recently filed a lawsuit against the Minister of Education, the National Universities Commission, and UNN, seeking to stop them from tampering with his records. With his exit, Nnaji becomes the eighth minister to leave President Tinubu’s cabinet since its inauguration in August 2023.
