Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has denied reports of a political alliance with former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 elections, stating that no agreement exists to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
Obi’s media aide and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, clarified this in an interview, explaining that Obi and Jonathan only maintain a cordial relationship. He said their recent meeting in Abuja was a normal discussion about national issues, not a political pact.
Tanko added that even during their earlier meeting in Ghana, there was no talk of 2027 or any alliance plans.
The statement comes amid rising speculation within opposition circles about possible coalitions to challenge Tinubu in 2027. Supporters online have also debated the idea of either Obi or Jonathan leading such an effort.
Obi met Jonathan on September 11, describing him as an “elder brother and statesman.” Their meeting, according to Obi, focused on Nigeria’s current situation.
Jonathan, who governed from 2010 to 2015, now plays a regional role in promoting democracy across Africa. Obi, meanwhile, continues consultations nationwide — moves seen as part of his early preparations for 2027.
