The Federal Government has started disbursing funds under the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF) to improve staff welfare, productivity, and innovation in Nigeria’s higher institutions.
According to a statement by Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Ministry of Education, the initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said over 9,000 staff from 219 institutions have received payments in the first phase, representing 28% of the 33,000 verified applicants.
Alausa explained that the first phase covered both academic and non-academic staff in a 30:70 ratio, reflecting inclusivity. He commended President Tinubu for prioritizing staff welfare and institutional growth, saying the initiative “restores dignity, rewards dedication, and rebuilds the foundation of our knowledge economy.”
He also assured that the Ministry will maintain transparency through quarterly reports, stakeholder engagement, and strict monitoring to ensure effective fund utilization and repayment.
Launched in August 2025, following stakeholder consultations in July, the fund is a major part of the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
Through TISSF, eligible tertiary staff can access up to ₦10 million in zero-interest loans to meet essential needs such as housing, healthcare, education, transport, and small business support.
