President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed the appointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five-year term.
Marwa, first appointed in January 2021, will now serve until 2031.
According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media, Bayo Onanuga, the decision reflects continued confidence in Marwa’s leadership.
Background and Career
Marwa previously served as military governor of Lagos and Borno States. He is an alumnus of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973, he held several key roles, including Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, and Registrar of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
He also represented Nigeria in international defence positions, serving as Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and later as Defence Adviser to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
Marwa holds postgraduate degrees in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and in Public Administration from Harvard University.
Achievements at NDLEA
Under his leadership, the NDLEA has achieved significant milestones, including the arrest of over 73,000 drug traffickers and the seizure of more than 15 million kilogrammes of illicit drugs. The agency has also expanded nationwide anti-drug abuse campaigns.
President Tinubu described the reappointment as a vote of confidence, urging Marwa to continue his efforts to combat drug trafficking and protect the nation’s youth.
