President Bola Tinubu has ordered the withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country.
According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the officers will now be redeployed to carry out core policing duties, especially in underserved and remote communities.
The directive followed a security meeting held on Sunday in Abuja with the police, Air Force, Army chiefs, and the Director-General of the DSS.
The statement explained that VIPs who require protection will now request armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Tinubu noted that many communities lack adequate police presence, making it difficult to ensure safety. To address this, he has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers and is working with state governments to upgrade training facilities nationwide.
Those in attendance at the meeting included Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and DSS Director-General Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
