Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is set to return to the country today, one month after traveling to London and Paris for rest and to plan his transition program ahead of his inauguration on May 29.
Tinubu, 70, is a prominent Nigerian politician and former governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. He is also the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and played a significant role in the party’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.
According to James Faleke, a member of the House of Representatives, Tinubu and his wife, Senator Remi Tinubu, will arrive at the Presidential Wing of the International Airport by 2 pm. Faleke added that anyone in Abuja and Nasarawa is invited to join in receiving the President-elect and First Lady, but only accredited persons will be allowed at the airport for security reasons. Buses will be provided for accredited persons, with accreditation starting at 12 pm and departure time set for 2 pm.
Tinubu’s return to Nigeria is expected to generate excitement among his supporters and political associates, who are keen to begin the process of transitioning to a new government. Many Nigerians are looking forward to seeing the President-elect in person and congratulating him on his victory.
Tinubu’s political influence extends beyond Lagos State. He is regarded as one of the most powerful politicians in Nigeria and has played a key role in the formation of the APC, which brought together four opposition parties to challenge the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 presidential election.
In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu was the APC’s candidate and defeated the PDP’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to become Nigeria’s President-elect.
Tinubu’s arrival in Nigeria is a significant step in the process of transitioning to a new government, and his supporters and political associates will be eagerly awaiting his return.
