The Federal Government has directed electricity distribution companies (Discos) to publicly disclose refunds made to customers who purchased meters under the Meter Asset Providers (MAP) scheme. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) announced this directive yesterday via its social media platforms.

Under the MAP framework, third-party investors supply and maintain meters, while customers who pay upfront are entitled to refunds through energy credits. However, consumer groups have raised concerns that Discos have not been consistent in reimbursing customers.

To improve transparency and encourage participation, NERC has mandated Discos to publish refund details on their websites. “This will demonstrate commitment to the scheme and boost customer confidence,” the commission stated.

With over seven million unmetered customers, the government is working to close the metering gap. Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen, recently emphasized the importance of metering all customers to reduce financial losses and improve revenue collection in the power sector.

Meanwhile, NERC held its first Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Stakeholders meeting of 2025, focusing on tariff methodology, market liquidity and transitioning to a multi-tier electricity market. The quarterly meeting brings together industry players to discuss and address key challenges in the power sector.
