The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to caution the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his recent comments about the Ijaw people.
The INC was reacting to Wike’s alleged statement that the Ijaw are a “minority of minorities” in Rivers and other South-South states, except Bayelsa.
Chief Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, INC’s National Publicity Secretary, said the congress is committed to peace and stability but urges Wike to focus on his ministerial duties.
“The Ijaw are the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria, with over 40 million people and the oldest documented tribe in the country. They are also the largest ethnic group in Rivers, occupying eight local government areas and are not a minority in Delta,” Oyakemeagbegha said.
He added that the Ijaw have always stood for fairness and equity in the Niger Delta and South-South region and will not be drawn into any provocation.
