A tragic incident occurred in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Monday following a heavy rainstorm that lasted just 30 minutes. The storm, which hit between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., caused part of a newly renovated badminton court at the Lower Niger River Basin Authority to collapse, killing a well-known Taekwondo coach, Musa Ismail.
Musa, a regular visitor to the facility, was reportedly caught under the debris when a section of the building gave way. He had recently emerged as the champion of the 2025 MKA Taekwondo Championship held in Ede, Osun State. He was also known for his friendly personality and dedication to coaching and fitness.
Following the incident, the facility has been sealed off, with the collapsed section clearly visible from outside. Staff at the River Basin Authority declined to comment and efforts to reach both the Public Relations Officer and the Managing Director for official statements were unsuccessful as of press time.
One staff member confirmed that Musa was not an employee but frequently used the facility for training. He noted that only the Managing Director could speak on the matter and advised media representatives to return the next day.
Musa Ismail, who got married just a year ago, is survived by his wife and child. The incident has left many in shock and mourning, with the sports community in Ilorin deeply saddened by the loss.
