A fire broke out on Wednesday night at the popular Phone Village in Challenge Market, Ilorin, Kwara State, destroying several shops and causing significant damage.

The fire, which began around 9:06pm, was reportedly triggered by a power surge. According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the flames mainly affected phone shops and repair centres in the market.

The market has over 120 shops, 80 kiosks and several open stands. Thankfully, swift intervention by firefighters helped limit the damage to just 10 kiosks.

In a statement on Thursday, the Fire Service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, said their team responded quickly and was able to prevent the fire from spreading further. “Our crew displayed professionalism and tactical skill, containing the fire and protecting most of the market,” he noted.

Director of the Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed sympathy to affected traders and market leaders. He also prayed for the restoration of their losses.

Traders at the scene praised the firefighters for their timely response and efforts in preventing a larger disaster.
