Staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) have embarked on an indefinite strike following unresolved issues with the university management.
The decision was announced by the Joint Action Committee, which includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT). In a letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the unions declared that the strike action had commenced immediately.
The letter, signed by the chairmen and secretaries of the respective unions, instructed all members of staff at LASU’s main campus, the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja, and the Epe campus to cease all work activities and vacate their duty posts without delay.
The unions emphasized that the strike would continue indefinitely until all demands made by staff members are addressed by the appropriate authorities. They described the decision as a resolution reached during an emergency congress held by the Joint Action Committee.
“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee… an INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION should commence effective from Thursday, 31st July, 2025,” the statement read. “We write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University.”
The statement concluded by thanking the university for its past support while reaffirming the unions’ commitment to achieving their demands.
Meanwhile, PUNCH Online reports that students of the institution were scheduled to begin the second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session next Monday, raising concerns about the impact of the strike on the academic calendar.
