Waste contractors in Abuja have threatened to halt services from September 25 over nine months of unpaid wages.

The Association of FCT Solid Waste and Cleaning Contractors (AFSOWAC), which handles sanitation across 44 lots in the city, said its members clear over 1,000 tonnes of refuse daily with more than 100 trucks, 60 tippers, and 3,000 workers.

In a letter to the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, the group warned that operations can no longer continue without urgent payment, noting that contractors have been borrowing to sustain services since January.

AFSOWAC also decried the deplorable state of the Gosa dumpsite, urged the FCT Administration to review outdated payment rates, and warned that a strike could worsen waste build-up and pose public health risks.
