A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on all seven terrorism charges.
Justice James Omotosho ruled that Kanu used illegal radio broadcasts to incite violence nationwide. The court linked his messages to the deaths of security personnel, destruction of police stations and INEC offices, and calls for attacks on the British High Commission. He also allegedly encouraged violence during the EndSARS protest and taught followers how to make explosives.
Kanu received multiple sentences including life imprisonment running concurrently. The judge said he avoided the death penalty out of mercy and ordered Kanu to be kept in protective custody outside Kuje. The seized Radio Biafra transmitter was forfeited to the government.
Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara criticised the ruling, while some Igbo women claimed the judgment was predetermined. A lawmaker, Obinna Aguocha, pleaded for leniency but was cautioned by the court.
Kanu disrupted proceedings several times, leading to his removal from the courtroom. The court rejected his motions challenging jurisdiction and claims about being charged under a repealed law, stating the trial remained valid since it began in 2015.
The judgment ends a trial that lasted over 10 year
